How to Hydrate: Avoid Sports Drinks and Stick With Water

It is common knowledge that dehydration can lead to death. It should come as no surprise that hydration is one of the most important aspects of maintaining excellent health. But with so many sports/health drinks on grocery shelves nowadays, the issue that keeps coming up is, “What is the best thing to drink to stay hydrated?”

What is Dehydration?

Dehydration is the condition that occurs when your body does not have enough water. It is vital for your health to drink plenty of water each day. Drinking water prevents dehydration, which can cause fuzzy thinking, mood swings, overheating, constipation, and kidney stones. Because water has no calories, it can help with weight loss and calorie reduction when swapped for beverages with calories like sweet tea or ordinary soda.

Water makes up roughly 60% of your body weight. It is necessary for all body functions. It clears toxins from your organs, delivers nutrients to your cells, cushions your joints, and promotes digestion.

Dehydration typically occurs if you do not consume enough water. Severe dehydration can cause dizziness, confusion, and seizures.

Symptoms of Dehydration

Excessive fluid loss during hot and humid weather might make it difficult to consume enough oral fluids to stay hydrated. Summer days spent outside and active may raise the risk of dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration can include excessive thirst, flushed skin, weariness, and rapid breathing/pulse. Left untreated, dehydration can cause major health concerns.

Pay attention to your thirst and watch for signs of dehydration. Try to replace fluids throughout activity, keeping in mind that your needs will be higher if any of the symptoms indicated above are present.

Why Should I Drink Water?

Water is crucial to our health. It is necessary for many bodily activities, including nutrient delivery to cells, waste elimination, joint and organ protection, and body temperature regulation.

Water Increases Your Energy

If you’re feeling exhausted and depleted, drink some water. Dehydration causes weariness. A proper supply of water may assist your heart in pumping blood more efficiently. Furthermore, water can help your blood transfer oxygen and other essential nutrients to your cells.

Water should almost always be the first option. Choose it over sugary beverages like soda or juice, which contain a lot of simple sugars and calories.

How Much Water Should I Drink?

Water intake varies with exercise level, health status, height and weight, gender, and other factors.

  •  Men should consume 13 cups (about. 3 liters) of water daily.
  •  Women should drink 9 cups (about 2 liters) of water daily. Pregnant women should typically consume 10 cups of water per day, while lactating mothers should consume 12 cups.
  • Children and teenagers should consume 6-8 glasses of water daily. Again, this is determined by exercise level, age, weight, and so on.
  • Eating water-rich fruits and vegetables also helps with your daily water intake.

Is it healthy for me to drink sports drinks while exercising?

Sports beverages are promoted to boost endurance and replace nutrients depleted after severe activity. But do you really need them?

Sports drinks contain electrolytes like potassium, calcium, and sodium, as well as simple sugars (some may be sugar-free). However, these nutrients are typically lost in considerable quantities after one hour or longer of high-intensity exercise. Sports drinks may be good for persons who have been doing rigorous exercise for an extended amount of time, especially if they are sweating profusely. Non-athletes, on the other hand, regard sports drinks as simply another sweet beverage.

Most people should drink water during their workout instead of sports drinks.

Do Caffeine Drinks Hydrate You?

Caffeine is found in coffee, certain teas, energy drinks, and sodas. Drinking a caffeinated beverage may lead you to urinate more, but it will not cause you to lose more fluid than you consumed. Caffeine, on the other hand, can trigger headaches and disrupt sleep in some people.

In general, water is the greatest option for staying hydrated. It contains no caffeine, has no calories, and is widely available to the majority of people.

Cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, celery, and watermelon have a high water content. They also include several vitamins and minerals. Refreshing! Fluids can be found in soups, stews, gelatin, and other foods.

Is it possible to store water in the car?

Consider how long a plastic water bottle has been sitting in a hot car before you grab for it.

Plastic water bottles’ chemical linkages degrade when exposed to high temperatures. This raises the risk that chemicals will enter the water. This level of chemicals, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is insufficient to cause health issues, but it can accumulate.

Bottled water should be kept in the same temperature as other consumables. During the summer, avoid leaving plastic bottles in hot cars. Instead, have a water bottle in your luggage or near the door for easy access on your way out.

Is it possible to become overhydrated by drinking too much water?

Most people understand what dehydration is and how it happens. Is it possible to overhydrate? Overhydration occurs when a person eats too much water, causing electrolyte levels in the body to fluctuate, including chloride, sodium, and potassium. Symptoms of dehydration (not drinking enough fluids) include thirst, flushing, weariness, and fast breathing. Overhydration, on the other hand, can result in nausea, headaches, cramping, weakness, and confusion.

How Can I Tell If I Am Drinking Enough Water?

Do you drink enough water that you rarely get thirsty? Is your urine clear or pale yellow? If you can confidently say yes to both questions, you’re probably getting enough liquids.
